About Guy (he/him)

I was born and raised in Durham and feel a deep connection to North Carolina in general. I decided to become a therapist as I struggled with my own mental health, substance use, and undiagnosed ADHD as a teenager. I didn’t receive an ADHD diagnosis until many years later, but I did receive mental health and substance use treatment in my adolescence and began to think about how I could help those with similar experiences to mine. Eventually, this led me to obtain my undergraduate (BS in Psychology/BA in Sociology) and graduate degree (Masters of Social Work) from UNC-Chapel Hill.

My education and early career centered on the clinical treatment of mental health and substance use disorders within the context of social determinants of health (i.e. economic status, trauma history, family dynamics, systems and institutions of power, social norms and culture). As part of my education, I interned with Lee County Child Protective Services and a community-based opioid addiction treatment program in Chapel Hill. I graduated with my MSW in 2018 and moved to Washington, DC where I continued to work in community-based mental health. I became a fully licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in 2021 and moved back to Durham in 2022. After working with a local company for three years, I opened my own private practice in the fall of 2025.

My clients describe me as calm, curious, easy-going, straightforward, and sincere. I take the time to get to know each client in-depth and tailor my approach as I learn about you and your mental health. I generally allow clients to identify their own goals and guide sessions, but I will take more of a lead if you are not sure where, or how, to start. I will encourage feedback and adapt my approach to fit you as we work together.
